Underdog Story Complete: Eagles Stun Pats 41-33

By Andreas Fanos on February 7, 2018

They did it. The underdogs or supposed underdogs were able to win it all and that was the Philadelphia Eagles with a high flying score of 41-33. The NFL season has been an unpredictable one of sorts. Experience and leadership proved to not help teams win games when it mattered in the playoffs as the strongest teams fell.

The New Orleans Saints lost by a heartbreak final last play, the offensive juggernaut of the Pittsburgh Steelers lost, and the Atlanta Falcons could not ride behind another explosive offense either. The Kansas City Chiefs fell short once again and traded away their QB Alex Smith. And then came the Super Bowl between the Patriots and the Eagles.

The Eagles deserve a lot of credit, and this is coming from a Giants fan, because everyone or most people doubted that the Eagles could reach the Super Bowl or win for that matter, including myself. They were able to defeat Tom Brady, who played a stellar game regardless, but the weak defense could not lift Brady to victory. Both teams surrendered a lot of points making for an entertaining final game. It was a fight to the finish, scrapping for every play.

The birds were able to stun the Pats. And it is nice to see that the city of Philly finally has a ring and ended a supreme drought of 52 long years. The fans have a lot to be happy for in the city of brotherly love. And to be utterly honest, the team is still surging into next season with their explosive offense and the much-improved defense.

I believe that the Saints can make a lot of noise next year with the impressive rookies that they drafted with Alvin Kamara and others. They are also led by Drew Brees, a phenomenal QB. I had the Saints winning it all or reaching the Super Bowl this year, which almost happened.

So is the cliff coming for Tom Brady? Is Father Time knocking on the door? Not quite yet. After putting up such a performance in the Super Bowl, I do not believe so. Brady could play for another couple of years and I am sure another ring could be in his future. But the Eagles must now face the question of what to do with hero Nick Foles when Carson Wentz comes back. Wentz will hopefully be healthy next season and win MVP, a title he could have won this year if he did not get injured.

The game did leave a dent in Tom Brady’s career, no matter what anyone says, in my opinion. One of the debated greatest QB’s of all time lost to a backup QB in the final game that mattered. But to be fair, Nick Foles played extremely well after not playing well at all towards the end of the season, a flip was switched.

Excuses are excuses. I do not believe the benching of CB Butler or the injury to Tom’s hand prevented them from winning; if anything, it was the horrific Patriots defense. Butler could have made a bit of a difference, but not a drastic change.

So the underdog was able to beat the top-dog. The Patriots were not able to win a second straight and a city was able to capture their first-ever Super Bowl victory. But the Patriots will surely be back next year. This year ended with a Cinderella-fashion finish.
